BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Though the Buffalo Catholic Diocese says it is too expensive to save St. Ann’s Church, parishioners met Wednesday to discuss how they can keep it from being torn down.

Over the weekend, the Diocese announced the decision to demolish the building, which was constructed in 1878, rather than pay $12 million to fix it. Supporters say the Broadway Avenue church needs to be preserved.

Martin Ederer, Co-Chairman of the Revitalization Committee said, “It’s one of the finest church interiors in Western New York. It’s as simple as that. Wood carvings executed locally, many of them. And I think it says a lot about our immigrant past. It says a lot about this neighborhood.”

A group of parishioners met in St. Ann’s School to attend mass even after the Diocese closed the church last year over safety concerns.

For now, the group is not sharing their ideas to save the building.
